A “how-to” audiobooks class for the novice and the pro, taught by Interact members Fred Sanders, Tamika Simpkins, and Rob Shapiro

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND INSTRUCTORS

“HIPS”
This master class for actors will include stretching, toning, relaxation and isolation exercises. Some of the styles and techniques introduced will include jazz, swing, classical as well as musical theatre basics. Cate will discuss audition tips and how best to break down a combination while integrating your acting choices and looking for the character of the dance within the steps.

Wear comfortable clothes and either jazz shoes, ballet slippers or light weight sneakers.


ABOUT CATE CAPLIN, Instructor
Cate Caplin has produced, directed and choreographed over 200 productions and her work has been seen on television, in films, music videos, commercials and in theatrical venues world wide from the Paris Opera House to the Broadway Stage. Cate is a 34 times regional and international Theatrical Ballroom Champion and her Production company, Night and Day Entertainment, co-founded with creative partner Vernon Willet, custom designs entertainment for private parties, corporate events and industrial trade shows. Cate wrote and directed her first feature film, Mating Dance which won an Accolade Award and can be found on Amazon.com. She has been the recipient of a Garland Award, a Women In Theatre Red Carpet Award, multiple LA Stage Alliance Ovation, Eddon and Scenie Awards and was the recipient of an Award of Excellence from the LA Film Commission for her work as a Writer, Director, Choreographer and Producer.

“LIPS”
In this class, Fred, Rob and Tamika will cover the following topics.
1. How to get audiobook work;
2. What the experience of reading an audiobook is actually like, with and without a director;
3. Preparing beforehand for a recording session: text work, vocal warmups, what to wear, what and when to eat and drink;
4. Fiction vs. nonfiction & first-person vs. third person (or even second-person!);
5. How to deal with dialogue, including different genders, different accents, and different ages;
6. Pacing of the read, rules of word stress;
8. Promoting, self producing/editing, knowing what books to target for your voice;
9. Working from home.


ABOUT FRED SANDERS, Instructor
Fred Sanders is a longtime Interact member. Originally from New York, he is a Yale graduate, and has been working as a stage, film, and TV actor — and theatre director — for over 40 years. For 15 of those years he has also been working in the audiobook business. He has directed over 250 audiobooks and narrated almost 100 for such publishers and producers as Penguin Random House, Simon and Schuster, Hachette, Harper, Audible, Deyan Audio, Mosaic, and Skyboat.


ABOUT TAMIKA SIMPKINS, Instructor
Philadelphia-born Tamika Simpkins is an actress, editor, writer or producer on several films and new media projects. She holds a double major Bachelor of Science degree in Computer and Information Science, and African-American Studies. Tamika has shared her acting talents in front of the camera on hit TV shows such as Southland, Shameless, The Wire, and The Shield. Her latest acting work can be seen on TV in Life In Pieces, and in Fall 2016 in the Lionsgate Film, Dirty 30. She has shared the screen with today’s most popular actors, including: William H. Macy, Regina King, Michael Chiklis, and Richard Roundtree. Honing her craft working in front of the camera, Tamika has also worked behind the camera as she has written, produced, and edited films that have toured the national film festival circuit, and screened at such festivals as the 48-Hour Film Festival, and Black Film and Media Conference. Beyond working in TV and film, Tamika’s theatre credits include: The Vagina Monologues (Alliant International University) and Harry and the Thief (Skylight Theater), and also the award-nominated productions of Black Women: State of the Union (Company of Angels and Skylight Theater) and Death and the King’s Horseman (The Lantern Theater). Audiobooks: Life and Love in Vivid Color, The Act, Love is…(Vol I), and coming soon, Just As The Sky is Blue.


ABOUT ROB SHAPIRO, Instructor
Rob Shapiro has performed on the broken half of a stripper’s runway in Northeast Minneapolis, to moonlit romantics in Bora Bora, to sweaty masses crammed into Texas roadhouses, to open air concerts on Hollywood & Highland. He studied theater at the Children’s Theatre Company and School, with regional theater and comedy in the years that followed. As a vocalist, musician, producer and composer, he has released 3 LPs with his band Populuxe, A Foggy Day in Brooklyn (1998), deep in an american evening… (2005) and Populuxe/3 (2014), plus 1 EP Daphne (2005), and is currently preparing the 5th for release this summer, as well as multiple sessions for other artists as a studio player. He is a voice-over actor and audiobook narrator, voicing books in multiple genres, such as “The Information: A History, A Theory, A Flood” and the fantasy noir “Low Town,” has been featured in multiple video games (Mafia III, Call of Duty: Black Ops, etc.) and various voices for animated characters.
